OUTERNATIONAL ARTISTS n°52 by Steve Henwood – 01-06-2025

Miles Davis is supposed to have said that what you don’t play is as important as what you do, and though of course he wasn’t meaning DJs, when Mr Henwood is short of inspiration there are always lacunae in previous programmes to fill in. So this month we get a substantial chunk of Mau Mau, the Torinese band who started in a similar spirit to the French bands we played last month but went on to make something increasingly their own. Likewise two major figures of British music – acoustic perpetual rebel Rory McLeod and the compositional perfection of The Penguin Café Orchestra, who have both unaccountably not been played on the programme until now. Plus peak psychedelic pop from Tomorrow, pretty-good-actually folk-ish posterboy Johnny Flynn, and more including a longer excursion into the solo work of Irmin Schmidt, 88 this week, whose music always graces the fade-out of the programme.

Si dice che Miles Davis abbia detto “quello che non suoni è importante quanto quello che fai” e anche se ovviamente non si riferiva ai DJ, quando il signor Henwood è a corto di ispirazione ci sono sempre delle lacune nei programmi precedenti da colmare. Quindi questo mese abbiamo una parte consistente dei Mau Mau, la band torinese che ha iniziato con uno spirito simile alle band francesi che abbiamo suonato il mese scorso ma che ha continuato a creare qualcosa di sempre più proprio. Allo stesso modo due figure importanti della musica britannica – l’eterno ribelle acustico Rory McLeod e la perfezione compositiva della Penguin Café Orchestra, che inspiegabilmente non sono mai state suonate nel programma fino ad ora. Inoltre il pop psichedelico di punta dei Tomorrow, il piuttosto buono, folkattuale del ragazzo da poster Johnny Flynn, e altro ancora, inclusa una più lunga escursione nel lavoro solista di Irmin Schmidt, che compie 88 anni questa settimana, la cui musica abbellisce sempre la dissolvenza in chiusura del programma.
