If any episode of Outernational Artists deserves the label ‘Difficult Listening’ it would be this one. Heavy psychedelia from 1968/9, Joseph Byrd & The United States of America – albeit only maximally difficult if consumed alongside Owsley’s finest – is barely preparation for an album that has also been confounding listeners since 1969: Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band’s monumental Trout Mask Replica, absolutely the kind of record that you can’t be quite the same after. All this bookended by the Miles Davis album that sent the jazzerati into meltdown in 1972 & a wah-wah trumpet freakout from ’74. Thank goodness, then, for Bristol city contemporary Chamber-Folk quintet Hedera, who can change your mood without shouting, a contrast in this company.

Se c’è un episodio di Outernational Artists che merita l’etichetta di “ascolto difficile”, è proprio questo. La psichedelia pesante del 1968/69 di Joseph Byrd & The United States of America (sebbene estremamente difficile solo se ascoltata insieme al meglio di Owsley) può essere considerato come la preparazione per l’ascolto di un album che ha spiazzato gli ascoltatori fin dal 1969: il monumentale Trout Mask Replica di Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, il tipo di disco dopo il quale non si può più essere gli stessi. Il tutto incorniciato dall’album di Miles Davis che ha mandato in tilt i jazzisti del 1972 e da una freakout di tromba wah-wah del ’74. Grazie al cielo, quindi, per il quintetto di folk da camera contemporaneo di Bristol, Hedera, che riesce a cambiarti l’umore senza urlare, un contrasto in questa compagnia.
